Most definitely Calabria’s better known beach, Tropea’s little stretch of soft sand crowded by sun-lovers from near and far. This coast, aptly named “The coast of the Gods”, is also dubbed as the Italian Tropics. Steep streets unwind towards dramatic white cliffs which plummet down to beach-level, dizzying the swimmers as they stare upwards from the warm green waters below. As views go, the beauty may only be beaten by the panorama from the rocky promontory above.
Tropea’s town center is also worth a visit, with its wonderful palazzi dating back to 18th century, among which the stunning Benedectine monastey of Santa Maria dell’Isola dominates the deep blue bay.
How to get there: tourists can take a flight to Lamezia Terme, which is the nearest airport to Tropea. From there, a bus or taxi ride can take them to Tropea beach. The journey takes just over an hour.
Where to stay: the Capovaticano Thalasso Resort & Spa is the perfect place to unwind and relax, with wonderful cuisine and top notch Spa treatments.
Best time to visit: May to October is the best time of the year to visit Tropea beach with pleasant weather adding to the pleasure. However, due to Italian mandatory holiday, reservations in August are highly recommended.
