Fundu Lagoon – Pemba

Fundu Lagoon, the last word in barefoot splendor, is the brainchild of designer Ellis Flyte and her business partners, brothers Alex and Marcus Lewis, who have created an idyllic hideaway on the south western side of Pemba Island, in the Zanzibar Archipelago, accessible only by boat.

The 18 Makuti-thatched, tented rooms  are dotted around the hillside and along the almost blindingly white beach. Some suites even boast private wooden decks with beautiful panoramic sea views, making waking up in the morning a real treat.

Spend your days paddling a canoe through the mangroves, diving in the clear waters of Masali Island, or trying a sugar rub or tropical facial in the spa.

RATES: Doubles from US$370 per night.

HOW TO GET THERE:  Pemba is a 30 minutes flight away from Zanzibar airport; once on the island, Fundu Lagoon staff  will drive you to the harbour where a speedboat awaits (15 minutes to the property).

WHEN TO GO: The best weather is between December and March and again from July to early November, with the  optimum months being July through to September.

BEST FOR: honeymooners.
